Series 3 Race 2
Midsummer in New Jersey is that pleasant mix of heat, thunderstorms and light air. Our overeager RC started the race in 3kts of variable breeze. The right shift and flood current turned the start into a downwind fiasco. Through some combination of dumb luck and clean living we managed a late but decent start at the weather end (At least the RC boat was on the right end of the line this time.)
We were high of the mark as soon as we cleared the line. For reasons unknown Presto was pinching above closed hauled. Foolishly we tried to roll them. The only thing that accomplished was allow Slice to roll both of us.
We managed to put the bow down and round the weather mark in mid-fleet. After a gybeset we hold high and roll the two j30s and someone else. The angle was tight enough that the mastheads didn't have as much as a speed advantage as we expected they would. We round the leeward mark in 5th, a ways behind Mojo, the first three boats are out of sight.
The breeze is really light now. There's a wind to the right, which made us think Mojo would extend and Jim would roll over top of us. We lucked into a bit of pressure on the left that lifted us to the mark and moved us in front of Mojo.
The wind continues its circuit around the compass. We gybe before the 2nd weather mark and beat (almost fetching) towards the finish.
Mojo is able to hold high and click into a righty that never came to us. The passed us to edge us out of 4th place by 10 seconds corrected. I don't have any complaints with our 5th place finish. That's a good job for our little boat in drifting conditions. We finished almost a leg ahead of the next boat behind us. The attitude was calm and crew work good.
The rig was the same as last week.
u= base - 4 (~34)
l = base -3 (~28)
backstay course tune was off.
Jib halyard was soft. There's a mark on the deck now.
The main halyard was just barely taught. We eased the strop three inches and the outhaul was loose
