Series 2 Race 3

The weather last night was beautiful for sailboat racing. The breeze at the start was 12-15 kts from the West. The water was flat. A strong incoming current was against the wind, which pushed the fleet towards the starting line.

We learned right was better during the holiday race. Our plan was to start in the middle of the line and protect the right. I misjudged the current and ended up getting there early. It felt like we had a good start at the leeward end, but RC signaled a general recall. Our second start was from the second row. We got tangled up with Matador and driven below a bunch of boats. The good news was we could tack out to the right into clear air.

We held port tack until the starboard layline. Meanie tacked under us and pinched us to a stop. We put the now down and ate gas for a little while; made the mark without issue. We were 4th around. We passed Meanie thanks to a good set but could not break the overlap.

We worked slightly more left the second time upwind. I mistakenly believed it would be better after seeing Jim cross us after restarting. He never went back. The right continued to be better. Tommy and Doug legged out and were beyond reach. Jim passed us as well but remained close. The second run was like the first; no gybing. We passed Meanie at the leeward mark and committed to the right side. In the lighter air Jim was significantly faster than we were.

We finished fourth, but thanks to Mayhem's and ForSail's OCS we scored a second.

The rig was tuned to base.

U = 37
L = 32
Head stay = 11 on the pink scale. That's base.
