Series 1 Race 5

At the bar I heard rumor that the wind was blowing at 21kts before the start. I don't think we ever saw more than 18kts. The weather forecast for a dying breeze and a shift to the right was correct. We used the blade on the first leg. I think that was a mistake. We could have held the big sail.

We started late at the boat and tacked immediately. A slight right shift took the sting out of the bad start. We were in the middle of the pack as boats converged.

Set the chute and roll Mojo, unfortunately, they pinned us and take us to the layline. We round the leeward mark just behind Meanie --grumble. He forces us to tack away. We switched to the genoa on the run. In the lighter breeze we're able to put the bow down and let the boat rumble. We held this tack almost to the layline. When I looked up we separated from all the J30s, Mojo and the Olson. I'm not sure what we did right. My best guess is we had favorable current as the tide started running. Bob might have a clearer idea.

Gybe set. We're laying the mark. We round just behind Doug and tack about a minute later. Now we're really trucking. A little lefty puts us ahead of Doug. We tack to consolidate. Gybe set again and head to a second place finish.

We could have won had the race been slightly longer. We were only 5 seconds in corrected time behind Tom Sinatra.

We added tension to the rig before the start.
+3 on the lowers and
+4 to the headstay.
I should have added more to the headstay
